Prakash Pawara, a 28-year-old from Ranipur village, Nandurbar district, lived with his parents, wife, and two young children in a small home on two acres of farmland. Despite his hard work, the land was barely enough to support his family. Financial struggles were a daily challenge, and Prakash often worked as a laborer on other farms, earning only Rs.150/- per day. As the only earning member in the family, he felt the volume of responsibility pressing down on him. His father and his wife helped on the farm, but their combined efforts still fell short. His life was filled with exhaustion and uncertainty. His children could not go to good schools, medical needs were neglected and every day was a struggle for survival.
“I work so hard, but there is never enough. How can I dream of a better life?” Prakash would often think, of the reality of his situation.
The Turning Point: A Ray of Hope
While working, Prakash witnessed CYDA’s skill development sessions for youth. Initially skeptical, as he had encountered similar programs before with no results, Prakash was encouraged by the CYDA team through multiple conversations and follow-ups. They emphasized how welding could improve his financial situation and help support his family. Their persistent support planted a seed of hope, and after careful consideration, Prakash decided to enroll in an Industrial Welding training program, marking a life-changing decision with CYDA’s guidance.
Learning the tools of change
In Pune, Prakash embarked on a three-month training course that would change everything. The program was not that easy, but it gave him the knowledge and skills he needed. He learned different welding techniques like arc welding, gas welding, and MIG/TIG welding. He learnt safety protocols, proper use of tools and how to manage projects. For the first time in his life, Prakash felt empowered.
“Before this, I did not know how to envision a future where I was just working on someone else’s farm. Now, through CYDA, I can see the possibility of creating something of my own,” Prakash said.
A path back to his village
After completing his course, Prakash was offered jobs in Pune, but the high cost of living and being away from his family made him hesitate. Instead, he decided to stay in his village, where no welding services were available. With a Rs.20,000/- loan from his uncle, Prakash bought the necessary welding equipment and began offering services. People previously had to travel 20 kms for welding, creating a market gap. He started small, welding doors, window grills, and agricultural tools. His business grew rapidly, filling the local need and establishing him as a trusted service provider in the village.
The Road to Success – Small Steps, Big Changes
Despite a tough start and slow business, Prakash’s dedication paid off. His reputation for quality work spread and his welding business grew steadily. From earning Rs. 150/day as a laborer, he now makes Rs. 7,000-10,000/month, becoming his own boss, supporting his family, and providing for his children’s education.
“Difficult circumstances offer us an opportunity to rise again; all it takes is determination and effort,” Prakash now says, reflecting on his life.
Prakash has transformed his life. His story is a powerful reminder that, no matter how difficult the road may seem, with the right guidance and unwavering determination, it is possible to turn struggles into success. Prakash’s story serves as an inspiration to others, showing that self-reliance is not just a dream—it is a reality within reach ( This article is contributed by Kalyani Mudaliar, Documentation Officer at CYDA)
