In the narrow lanes of Jai Jawan Nagar, Yerwada, lives a determined young girl named Gurpreet. Born into a family of six, she has grown up witnessing the struggles of limited financial resources, where every day is a challenge. Yet, against all odds, Gurpreet has accomplished a remarkable feat—she successfully passed her 12th standard exams. Now, with unwavering determination and a passion for technology, she dreams of pursuing a degree in computer engineering. Her journey is one of resilience, ambition, and the unyielding spirit to break barriers and build a brighter future.
Gurpreet’s journey is a testament to resilience and hope. She became part of CYDA’s Youth Resource Center in 2021, a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of her transformation. The center offered her a sanctuary where she could nurture her aspirations through various activities, such as computer classes, music lessons, and leadership workshops. Among these, the Advanced Computer Course stood out, igniting her passion for programming and the world of computers.
However, the road to her dreams was not smooth. Financial constraints loomed large, threatening to derail her ambitions. Most coaching classes were beyond her family’s means, casting a shadow over her bright aspirations. But YRC was the beacon of hope she desperately needed.
“Computer classes in YRC gave me new hope to achieve my dream. Here, I can easily learn the concepts of computers and also keep my motivation alive,” – Expressed Gurpreet with determination.
With the skills and confidence, she gained, Gurpreet embarked on a mission to make a difference. She began facilitating computer classes for students from the 5th to the 8th grade at Buran Coaching Classes in Yerwada. Her classes quickly filled with eager young minds. 24 – students from her community, each one soaking in the knowledge she shared. Recognizing a need in her community, Gurpreet started remedial classes at her home, where seven more students benefitted from her teaching. Her efforts earned her Rs.6000/-, which significantly supports her family. Yet, more than the financial gain, Gurpreet treasures the confidence and leadership skills she developed at YRC.
“I have developed this confidence from YRC, as I got the opportunity to do volunteering and lead various activities,” she proudly states.
“I am taking these classes to support my family financially. Whatever I learned I try to teach it to my students. I also learned to improve my teaching skills,” she explains, embodying the spirit of selfless service and continuous learning. “Thank you, CYDA for giving me this opportunity!” she exclaims, her voice filled with emotion.
Her journey took an inspiring turn when she was selected to attend a climate conference in Mumbai. Here, Gurpreet met various UN representatives and learned about actionable steps to combat climate change. Her determination and innovative mindset stood out as she shared how she used technology to tackle challenges in her community. “I gave a short speech about how we can use our knowledge and skills to contribute to society. I shared my experiences of working with students in underprivileged areas and how empowering others creates a ripple effect of positive change,” she recalls. The conference experience, along with several leadership camps in Satara and Mumbai, made Gurpreet emotionally stronger and more confident.
Her journey within YRC began as a volunteer, then as a member, later as vice president, and now as a key member of CYDA’s youth wing. Currently pursuing her third year in computer engineering, Gurpreet’s story is one of hope and perseverance. Her transformation from a hopeful student to a community leader and teacher serves as a powerful reminder that, with the right support and opportunities, dreams can flourish even in the most challenging circumstances.
